Alpecin: German Engineering

Does Alpecin Shampoo Help To Combat Hair Loss?

It's the HAIR LOSS shampoo that is causing a bit of a stir in the industry. With a large budget spent on recent advertising campaigns across Europe, the German product Alpecin is fast becoming the hottest selling men's hair shampoo on the market.

Hair loss products are a bit of a taboo subject, and many men resort to purchasing their hair loss products online rather than over a counter. But, with Alpecin selling in major retail outlets across the country, it seems the product has mass appeal beyond internet sales.

John Hudson, a regular user of Alpecin says: "I've used Alpecin for a number of years now. Though It doesn't regrow any lost hair, it helps aid the strengthening of the roots. I use it in conjunction with a hair loss foam from another manufacturer and I'm happy with the results. I've never got anything to lose from using Alpecin - it's either that or Head & Shoulders. I definitely don't feel embarrassed about buying Alpecin over a counter - but I prefer to purchase the hair loss foam online. There's just something a little more discrete about Alpecin that gives me the confidence to buy it in public".

So, after a brief background on Alpecin, the next question you'll all be asking is 'does it actually help to stop hair loss in men?'. Here's the verdict...

Alpecin’s ‘After Shampoo Liquid’ contains caffeine and is said to tackle genetic hair loss. The German manufacturers of Alpecin base these claims on studies undertaken which showed that caffeine stimulates weakened hair roots. Studies, carried out in January 2007, involved hair follicles being removed from balding men and artificially grown in a laboratory. The follicles were then all exposed to testosterone and some were also exposed to caffeine. The follicles that were exposed to testosterone showed reduced growth (as occurs in Male Pattern Hair Loss) while the follicles that were exposed to testosterone and caffeine seemed to be less affected by the testosterone and also stimulated new growth.

While these results seem to suggest that caffeine prevents the negative effects of testosterone and is a cure for genetic hair loss, there is a question over how successful it is when applied outside of a laboratory, directly onto the human scalp.

Alpecin claims to have conducted its own research on its products – these show positive results but on only very small numbers. Indeed, before a conclusive answer can be given on caffeine’s effectiveness as a hair loss treatment, much more research needs to be carried out on a much larger scale. This type of research involves large-scale clinical trials in order to accurately understand the effects of caffeine on the human scalp, how much needs to be absorbed to prevent hair loss and how much caffeine can be safely absorbed by the human body.

After consideration, the Belgravia medical team don’t deem it realistic that enough caffeine would be absorbed by the scalp to effectively assist in the prevention of hair loss, even if caffeine was found to be an effective hair loss preventative in laboratory conditions. As shampoo is diluted by water and only applied for a short period of time before being washed off, minimal quantities will be absorbed into the scalp, if any.

The Daily Mail recently published ratings of 8 hair loss products, Alpecin being one of them.

Currently, there are only two hair loss treatments Rogaine and Nanogen that have been licensed in the UK and by the government medical regulatory bodies.

If you suffer from hair loss then Alpecin is a great product to use in conjunction with other forms of more direct treatments, such as hair loss tablets, foam and spray, which can all be purchased from the market.
