X Factor Judge Louis Walsh Admits Hair Transplant

Image
During a recent interview with The Daily Mail, X Factor judge Louis Walsh admitted and described his recent hair transplant experience. The 59-year old music manager said it was finally time to take action after attempts to dye, style and cut his hair in ways that hid his thinning and receding hairline began to fail.  His friend Simon Cowell prompted Louis to do something, telling him his hair was thinning and that he had bags under his eyes.  Walsh is a great example of the power of hair transplantation to create a younger, thicker, fuller hairline. The post-surgical results are really dramatic for him. A full hairline is really important for "framing" the face and preventing the appearance of premature aging. The host is pleased with his results, telling The Daily Mail: "It’s called maintenance...It’s just me, with my own hair, feeling better." And he is encouraging others to take action early and solve the problem before it really becomes a problem.

Tomorrow: Live Miami Interview on Female Hair Loss

Image
When it comes to hair loss, we hardly ever think of women - but did you know women are almost just as at risk as men?  To learn more about female hair loss, including new treatment options for women, tune in tomorrow morning for my interview with Live Miami at 11am on NBC Miami.  More than half of all women over 40 experience hair loss  Women can inherit a ‘hair loss gene,’ just like men Hair loss occurs differently in women than in men - i.e., “thinning” It can be caused by hormonal changes, due to menopause and pregnancy along with age, medications, dieting, bad health, etc. There are special treatments for women: Rogaine For Women, vitamin supplements, micro-surgical hair transplants and even Latisse (the Brooke Shields eyelash drug) A new genetic test can predict a woman’s risk of hair loss

Recession Alert: Bradley Cooper

Image
Good news for men everywhere, even with a receding hairline you can be named People magazine's sexiest man alive, just look at this year's winner Bradley Cooper. In recent photos of the Hangover star, 36, you can see early signs of temporal recession, which isn't at all uncommon for a man his age. Thirty percent of men in their 30s experience hair loss and the number increases to 40 percent as men enter their 40s. From the photos, it appears that Cooper is Norwood Class II, which means that while his hairline is maturing, typical of an adult hairline, he has yet to see any frontal balding. He is also fortunate to have an otherwise full head of hair. Considering his resume now includes the sexiest man alive title, Cooper might want to consider a proactive hair regimen of FDA-approved Propecia or Rogaine, which could help him avoid any further recession. He would hardly be the first actor to take action against hair loss, more celebrities are investing in hair restoration tha

Selma Blair: "I'm going to be bald."

Image
Actress Selma Blair recently gave birth to a baby boy and is opening up about her postpartum hair loss, saying in a recent interview, "I'm going to be bald." Postpartum hair loss is relatively common - but she doesn't need to worry, it isn't permanent. The medical community believes the hair loss could be triggered by the hormonal fluctuations that occur during this period. While pregnant, women see a surge in their estrogen and progesterone levels (which is why women have such great hair when pregnant) - and after the baby is born, these levels return to the pre-pregnancy level. It is this sudden drop-off in hormone levels that causes the hair follicles to go into short-term shock. As a result, shedding is quite common in the weeks following the delivery. But the bottom line is, postpartum hair loss is normal, temporary, and shouldn't be a problem or a cause for major concern. But, if is she wants to speed up the hair recovery process, she may want to conside

Survey: Hair Loss Impacts Every Part of Life

Image
A recent survey from  HairLoss.com , found that losing one’s hair affects virtually every part of life, from social and work life, to dating and family life. Both men and women reported that hair loss has negatively affected their self-confidence and self-esteem.  Survey Findings:  90 percent of those who suffer from a chronic hair loss condition reported that they think about their hair loss "all the time," as opposed to "sometimes" or "not much." 90 percent of respondents reported that hair loss has affected their social life. 80 percent said their work and dating lives have been affected.  Just under 80 percent reported that their home lives and intimacy have been affected for the worst.  While hair loss can do doubt be a painful process for both men and women, there is a silver lining, the science of hair loss is advancing at an amazing rate - and promising new treatments are  being developed each year. The important thing for people to realize is, tha

Latisse for Hair Loss?

Image
There is new hope for men and women faced with thinning hair, Latisse, the same drug that has been proven effective in growing thicker, longer, darker eyelashes. Latisse is already FDA approved to grow eyelashes, but Allergan recently began Phase 2 clinical trials to use it on male and female pattern hair loss as well. If it succeeds, it will be only the second topical treatment to receive FDA approval for hair loss (the other is Rogaine). I've been prescribing Latisse for off-label use on the scalp - and have already begun seeing some promising results. Latisse isn't going to regrow hair on a bald scalp but it can help tool in preventing hair loss. For more on Latisse for hair loss, check out my  recent article  on  TODAY.com .

LeBron James' Hairline Woes

Image
LeBron James' receding hairline has been the punchline of many jokes and is often the topic of media speculation, but it appears the basketball star might be planning to put an end to all that.  In a recent Twitter post, LeBron suggested his hairline might be coming back soon. While the 26-year old athlete might be using humor to address the situation, if he is serious about wanting to reverse the damage, there are options available that can help. LeBron's best bet is a minimally invasive hair transplant with NeoGraft FUE. The NeoGraft FUE procedure allows athletes like LeBron to avoid having stitches in their donor area, therefore, allowing him to return to training and workouts in as little as three days. Another bonus, NeoGraft leaves no 'tell-tale' linear scar, so very short haircuts are possible later on. He would hardly be the first public figure to take action against hair loss, more celebrities and athletes are investing in hair restoration than ever before. New

What is the Story With Joey Lawrence's Hairline?

Image
Joey Lawrence's hairline has caused much speculation over the years. After years of sporting a bald head, it appears the 35-year old is ready to start growing his hair out. Despite those who say otherwise, Joey appears to have underwent a hair transplant. When you look at his hairline up close, you can see that it is sparse and "grafty," telling signs of a transplant. But he is fortunate that it doesn't appear "pluggy."  Another red flag is the frontal peak and straight lines of his hairline, which look unnatural. Hopefully he plans to remedy this later with micrografts that can fill in the hairline and help create a more natural looking appearance.  While his hairline is telling, the major giveaway is the lack of temporal points and the bizarre hair directions you can see in the frontal 1/4 inch that do not follow or match the hair behind. Grafts were placed perpendicularly to the skin and low density.  It appears that he, like many stars and athletes today

Obama: Genetics, Not Stress Behind Gray Hair

Image
During an interview this week President Obama, 50, made a comment about his gray hair, which he noted disappears after he gets a haircut. While some media outlets jumped on the comment as an opportunity to talk about how he handles the stress of the job. Obama quickly clarified that his gray hair was the result of genetics, and not stress, explaining that his grandfather was gray by 29.  While stress may play a role in the appearance of gray hair, in the end, it really comes down to genetics and aging. Which means, if you want to know your risk level, take a look at your parents and grandparents and when they grayed, it can give you an idea of what you can expect.  Though it varies by individual, on average, the onset of gray hair can usually be seen around age 30 for men and age 35 for women, but for others, it can occur much earlier, and some, much later.  As of right now, there isn't a lot we can do to prevent or delay the onset of gray hair, but that may change in the near futu
